I think the bigger problems are the first two, as in my opinion they are much more universal. Overall I liked the humor in Uramichi Oniisan, but I think at times it felt a bit heavy handed or repetitive, and some jokes just didn't really land for me. This will mainly serve as my personal opinions on the humor in Uramichi Oniisan on what I thought of it. I will mention that I do think the voice casting is pretty good, with many of the voices feeling pretty good for the associated character.įinally I'm going to talk about the humor, which is partially a stupid thing to review because of how different people can have wildly differing opinions on it. The sound was also nothing special, although that isn't an aspect that I feel is important to this kind of show. It definitely isn't cookie cutter standard like some shows, but apart from some of its distinct looking reactions and a few smaller aspects, it is quite bland and uninteresting. The art of Uramichi Oniisan is really nothing that special. I don't personally think any of them are truly stellar, but I think they are plenty good enough for the show to succeed. They also are all great for demonstrating the show's overall message, with them all having failed to achieve what they wanted to in some way or another. The characters are able to play off each other, and really add to the humor. They all have distinct and unique personalities, that all end up being funny in their own special ways. The characters are the next logical thing to discuss, which I consider pretty good. I do think I'm overselling the theme a bit, the show in itself isn't super preachy or heavy handed with its messaging, but these themes are there for anyone to see. It both shows how awful life can be sometimes, while straying away from nihilism in showing how that isn't all life is. It's a good message, and one I'm sure plenty of people would benefit from hearing. But despite how bleak and awful life may seem to be, we can find our own motivation to keep pushing on, reaching back into our grade school teachings to persevere and continue moving forward. In my opinion the overall message of the show is about how despite what kids are taught about how they can "do anything" and "be who they want to be," plenty of us will end up in jobs we hate, with less than stellar relationships, future prospects, and declining mental health as we go through the dull motions of our unchanging lives. Instead I'll be focusing more on its themes. that a comedy needs to pay too much attention to, aside from maybe some character backstories. It takes a cynical view on the menial and depleting life of most adults, and uses that often too-true outlook to poke fun at society as a whole, while also having plenty of more generic humor if the darker bits aren't your thing.įirst I'll talk about its narrative strengths. It has some pretty funny moments, characters, and plots throughout its 13 episodes. Overall I think it was a positive experience, and if the premise sounds like something you'd be interested in, then check it out. Uramichi Oniisan is a dark comedy focusing on a depressed actor on a kid's TV show.
